In the picturesque state of Maine, one leader’s inspiring story has captivated the hearts of many. Dr. Abdullahi Ali, a candidate for the presidency of Jubaland, Somalia, is making waves not only in the Horn of Africa but also in his long-time home of Portland, Maine. As a refugee who arrived in the United States more than 15 years ago, Dr. Ali has built a remarkable legacy of entrepreneurial success, philanthropic initiatives, and dedication to public service that has won him the admiration of both his local community and Somali diaspora.
Dr. Ali’s story begins in Somalia, where he was forced to flee due to conflict. Arriving in Maine as a refugee, his journey has been anything but ordinary. Over the past decade and a half, he has not only established thriving businesses but also earned three university degrees, including a Ph.D. in Public Policy. "I came to this country seeking refuge, but I found opportunity, and I wanted to make the most of it," Dr. Ali reflected during a recent interview with Hiiraan.
His entrepreneurial ventures have made an indelible impact on his Maine’s local community. Today, Dr. Ali’s businesses and non-profit organizations employ over 200 people and span across four locations in the state. He credits his success to hard work and perseverance. “When I arrived here, I had nothing but dreams. Through determination, I’ve been able to build something that not only sustains my family but also provides jobs and opportunities for others in our community,” he said.
Dr. Ali’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. Over the years, he has received multiple awards for his business acumen and his contributions to the state. Known for his leadership, vision, and dedication to the principles of inclusion and accountability, Dr. Ali’s influence extends beyond his professional life. He has also become an integral part of Maine’s Somali diaspora community, where he is widely celebrated for his achievements and his ongoing work.
Yet, Dr. Ali's ambitions do not stop at the borders of Maine. His passion for uplifting his people extends to East Africa, specifically Somalia. Driven by a desire to see a better future for his homeland, Dr. Ali founded the Nurture All Africa Foundation, an organization he led until recently that is focused on providing support to communities in East Africa. "I believe in the potential of Africa, and Somalia is at the heart of that," he said.
In addition to his philanthropic efforts, Dr. Ali is now a presidential candidate in Jubaland, a region in southern Somalia. His platform emphasizes good governance, economic development, and the protection of human rights. “We need a government that serves the people, that is inclusive, and that is accountable to its citizens. I am running because I believe that we can do better, and I want to be part of the solution,” he remarked.
In Maine, Dr. Ali remains deeply rooted in the community that welcomed him as a refugee. Despite his political ambitions in Somalia, he made it clear that his love for Maine and the US will never fade. "Maine is my home, and it will always be a part of me. The people here have given me so much, and I will continue to give back in every way I can," he affirmed.
Looking ahead, Dr. Ali has plans to visit Somali diaspora communities across the United States, including in Boston, Ohio, and Minnesota, to engage with them and share his vision for both Somalia and the broader African continent. His mission is to inspire others to pursue their dreams, just as he did when he arrived in Maine as a refugee.
In his words, “Leadership is about vision, balance, and hard work. It’s about understanding the challenges, but also having the courage to dream big and take action. I want to lead by example—showing others that no matter where you start, you can create change.”
As Dr. Ali’s campaign for the presidency of Jubaland progresses, it is clear that his influence will continue to inspire countless individuals, both in the US and East Africa. With a heart committed to service and a mind dedicated to progress, Dr. Abdullahi Ali embodies the qualities of a true visionary leader, one who has never forgotten where he came from, but always looks ahead to the future.
