LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - A Laredo organization is stepping up during Stroke Awareness Month to remind the community that support is available for stroke survivors and their caregivers, serving as a hub for outreach and resources while hosting fundraising events throughout May and June.

Karla Cortez, with the Laredo Stroke Support Group, explains that strokes are often misunderstood. “A stroke is usually a clot in the brain, while a heart attack is a clot in the heart. People often confuse the two,” she said.

Cortez emphasizes that stroke impacts more than just the individual—it affects the entire family. That’s why the Laredo Stroke Support Group has been serving the community for over 13 years, offering free services to help survivors and their caregivers improve their quality of life.

Support and Services Offered:

  • Speech therapy
  • Exercise and yoga classes
  • Art and water-cycling sessions
  • Caregiver support groups for sharing experiences

“You can be a father, a mother, a son—anybody can come into the group and be welcomed,” Cortez added.

Upcoming Stroke Awareness Month Events

Several fundraising and awareness events are planned throughout May and June, including:

  • Fine Arts Fiesta – Stroke survivor art exhibit
  • Salsa Bowl – Community bowling fundraiser
  • Bingo Nights – Fun for a cause

The Fine Arts Fiesta opens on Friday, May 2, at the Laredo Center for the Arts, located at 200 San Agustin Avenue. For more information about the event, you can call 956-775-5774.
