SPOKANE, Wash. -- As the weather gets warmer, one local program is helping Spokanites keep their landscaping beautiful and their water bill low.

According to Water Wise Spokane, a City of Spokane program that works to protect our local waterways and promote conservation, Spokane uses nearly double the national average for daily water use. Most of that water is used to water our lawns.

However, according to Water Wise, that high amount of water use might not even be keeping your law green.

Water Wise said lawns might still turn brown, despite heavy watering, because homeowners are watering at the wrong time of day, don't have the right fertilizer or are overwatering.

To help Spokanites get this right and save water, Water Wise Spokane will send someone out to your home, for free, to help you figure out what's going on with your lawn.

"We have water technicians that will come out to your home and actually do an inspection with you and an audit and give you tips, tell you what kind of sprinkler heads could make a difference or help you set up your controller box. We want you to have that information and we have it available," said Kirstin Davis of Water Wise Spokane.

The program also offers rebates to homeowners who decide to switch their grassy lawn out for rocks, bark or another more eco-friendly option.

Water Wise also hosts various classes on water conservation and reducing costs at Spokane Public Library. Click HERE for class info.
