25 pounds of illegal drugs seized after police chase in South Carolina
Suspect allegedly had enough fentanyl to kill 5.74 million people
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTV) - Police seized more than 25 pounds of fentanyl after a car chase in South Carolina on Thursday.
The chase began around 4 p.m. near Fantasy Harbour Boulevard and Forestbrook Road in the Myrtle Beach area when a Horry County police officer tried to pull a truck over for traffic violations.
Police said the driver did not pull over, and during the chase, threw packages out the window.
As the chase went on, police said the driver was “behaving erratically” before he crashed near Pine Island Road, which is about three and a half miles from where the pursuit first started.
The driver was said to have hit other vehicles during the chase and had to be taken to the hospital. One bystander was also hurt.
Police have not yet released the driver’s name, but said he will face “significant” charges once he gets out of the hospital.
Once officers gathered the fentanyl packages the driver threw out his window, they weighed a total of 25.3 pounds, which is equivalent to 11.48 kilograms. Police said the street value of that quantity was “well over” $1 million.
According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, one kilogram of fentanyl is enough to kill 500,000 people. Using that figure, the Myrtle Beach suspect had enough fentanyl to kill approximately 5.74 million people.
