China and Cambodia to Launch ‘Golden Dragon’ War Games
China’s People’s Liberation Army will practice making war with the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces in the “Golden Dragon” joint military exercises from May 14 to 28
Alliance: China and Cambodia have deepened their deep military cooperation since staging the first iteration of “Golden Dragon” in 2016. The drills have been held every year since, as soldiers and military planners from the two nations prepare for a future when they will fight shoulder to shoulder.
This year’s exercises, according to Cambodia’s Khmer Times, will aim to “deepen the strategic partnership, enhance military cooperation, exchange experiences, and strengthen both countries’ counterterrorism and disaster response capabilities.”
- The war games will include land, air and sea operations, taking place in two different locations across China.
- Over 2,100 troops are expected to participate, over 1,300 sent by the Cambodian military.
- The drills will include multiple warships, Chinese C20 helicopters, artillery systems, armored vehicles, drones, unmanned ground vehicles, robotic dogs and combat units.
This exercise enhances the military-to-military relationship between Cambodia and China, allowing troops to gain experience with modern technologies and equipment. It’s essential for preparing our forces to handle modern warfare and emerging threats.
—Gen. Ith Sarath, deputy commander in chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces
