Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence, has fired two high-ranking intelligence officials from the National Intelligence Council (NIC) as they opposed US President Donald Trump, weeks after the council released a declassified memo written by their agency which contradicted Trump administration’s stance for using the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan immigrants.

Gabbard fired Mike Collins, who was serving as acting chair of the National Intelligence Council along with his deputy, Maria Langan-Riekhof. Both the officials had over 25 years of experience in the intelligence community.

Gabbard’s office confirmed that the two officials were laid off due to their opposition to the US president, The Guardian reported, quoting an email sent on Wednesday.

“The director is working alongside President Trump to end the weaponization and politicization of the intelligence community,” said Gabbard’s office.

The firings followed the release of a declassified memo from the National Intelligence Council which reported that there wasn’t any coordination between Venezuela government and the Tren de Aragua gang.

It was in contradiction to the fact which the Trump administration had given as a reason to invoke the Alien Enemies Act and deport Venezuelan immigrants. The intelligence assessment was made public by the council over an open records request filed by the Freedom of the Press Foundation.

The latest round of firings by Gabbard and her team comes as National Intelligence aims to eliminate bias and inefficiency from the intelligence community. According to Gabbard’s deputy chief of staff, Alexa Henning, the two officials were removed for “politicizing intelligence” as she referred to them as “Biden holdovers”.

“Also, it shouldn’t be lost on you that the leak of classified info was a NIC product, which is against the law, that is the issue,” Henning added.

The role of National Intelligence Council is significant in attributing to country’s spy services as it helps to combine intelligence gathered from different agencies into comprehensive assessments, which is then utilised by the White House and senior officials of national security agencies.
