Residents, businesses pitch in for 65th Clean-Up Day

May 3 marked the 65th year that the Lake Placid Community held a Volunteer Clean-Up day. This community effort continues because of many people volunteering their time and supporting the day.

The weather started out mild with rain beginning early, but that did not deter those who came out.

Together over 1,140 pounds of trash was collected, bagged and weighed on Saturday. PLUS an additional 40 bags were filled on Monday and Tuesday!

Volunteers from across Lake Placid came out. Some for the first time and others who have been volunteering for many years. Every year there is one organization in charge of the organizing and implementing the event.

Community Clean Up Day is guided by those who have set the framework for years before. This year, The Rotary Club of Lake Placid was fortunate enough to be part of the lead group to organize this great day.

Thank you to the following organizations that put together groups to come out that day: USA Luge, High Peaks Resort, Community Bank, Boy Scouts Troop 10 led by Torry Hoffman, Lake Placid Central School led by teacher Sam Baker, The Garden Club of Lake Placid and Northwood School.

A special thank you to this year’s Title Sponsor, Mr. Mikes Pizza and Italian Restaurant. The Nicola Family (Dave, Ben and Serina) hosted volunteers after this year’s rainy cleanup with a delicious pizza party that was appreciated by all who attended!

Thank you to the newly opened Penalty Box Arcade who donated tokens for the coveted “Golden Eggs” hidden for a special incentive for the smaller volunteers.

Additional thank yous to The Bookstore Plus for sponsoring the prizes for the Artwork contest. Thank you to the UPS Store and Tina Leonard Real Estate for printing the initial blank poster contest and the Posters with the winning artwork and Origin Coffee Co. for graciously providing hot coffee to volunteers at Registration.

Many thanks to North Elba Transfer Station Supervisor Shannon Porter and members of the Town of North Elba Highway Department and the Lake Placid Village Highway Department for coordination and implementation of the picking up of the bags of trash and weighing it!

Special thanks to the following members of the Lake Placid Community who worked on planning this year’s event with The Rotary Club of Lake Placid and volunteered on the day of the Clean-Up: Karlan Jessen of The Adirondack Sports Council, Town Councilwoman Emily Kilburn Politi, Deputy Mayor Jackie Kelly, Trustee Andrew Quinn and Trustee Katie Brennan.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” — Margaret Mead.

A final thank you to everyone who took time out of their weekend to pickup trash in the town we call home.

Debbie Erenstone and Daci Shenfield are co-chairs for The Rotary Club of Lake Placid Community Clean-Up Day Committee.
