Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has been subject of aggressive links with Atletico Madrid for months now
Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the appointment of Thomas Frank as their new boss ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Following his excellent work at Brentford for over seven years, Thomas Frank is wanted by Daniel Levy to succeed Ange Postecoglou at White Hart Lane. The Dane wants to make the switch across the capital and he could have a strong influence on Spurs’ transfer window.
Several players’ futures remain up in the air, which is something Daniel Levy and Johan Lange along with the incoming boss must resolve on priority. One of those is of Cristian Romero. The 2022 World Cup winner has been a mainstay at Tottenham since arriving from Serie A side Atalanta, racking up 124 appearances.
Despite enduring an injury-hit, underwhelming past season, Cristian Romero has been no shortage of suitors. He has been subject of concrete interest from Atletico Madrid for months now, and the centre-back has made his desire public to play in La Liga in the future. The prospect of playing for Atletico Madrid, under fellow compatriot Diego Simeone, could be too much for the 27-year-old to reject.
The Argentinean international still has two years left on his contract, and Spurs would want a sizeable fee for his services if he pushes to leave this summer. Former Leicester City and Brentford manager Martin Allen has urged Tottenham to keep hold of Romero even if they receive a big bid this summer. He feels the North Londoners would not want to sanction his departure for any fee under £60m.
“They won’t want to sell Romero now,” Martin Allen exclusively told Tottenham News.
“He would fit in at Atletico Madrid, that’s for sure, under Simeone, he would absolutely love him. He gets sent off every year for these stupid challenges, but he’s a good player.
“What would they be looking for, for him? I can’t see them selling him for under £60m, not the way it is in the Premier League at the minute.
“With them in the Champions League, they can’t afford to sell their best players.”
Romero has his heart set on a move to Atletico Madrid, having already held talks with their boss Diego Simeone. But with no transfer fee agreed between the clubs, Tottenham are still hopeful of being able to convince him to stay now that they have secured Champions League football for next season.
Romero is not just a FIFA World Cup winner but also played a key role in the UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United last season. Retaining his winning mentality will be key in our aim to evolve as a team where success is habitual.
With Frank set to come into the club and there is going to be a lot of buzz going into the new campaign, Levy and Co. may try their best to make Romero stay. As chances of Son Heung-min leaving the club after a decade-long service are high, Romero could also be made the club’s next captain in a bid to retain his services for another campaign.

Between 2020 and 2024, Osimhen cemented himself as Napoli’s ultimate talisman, but his relationship with the management deteriorated during the troublesome 2023/24 campaign, which put him on the transfer list last summer. The former Lille star was hoping to join a top club like Chelsea or PSG, but eventually had to settle for a loan move to Galatasaray. Victor Osimhen only wants Man United Osimhen guided the Istanbul-based giants towards another Turkish triumph while scoring 37 goals across all competitions. Although Galatasaray are desperate to keep him beyond his current loan spell, it remains a difficult task, especially with the player eyeing a move to a more ambitious club. The Nigeria international also had the opportunity to join Al-Hilal who offered him enormous wages, but he turned down the proposal in favour of staying in Europe. According to Fichajes.net, Osimhen has made up his mind, choosing Man Utd as his next destination. The Napoli star is reportedly keen to make a move to Old Trafford and spearhead the club’s charge towards redemption. Could Osimhen be the answer to Man Utd’s striker dilemma? The Red Devils have been desperate to find a new bomber, but have thus far fallen short in their attempts to lure the likes of Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres. United have also been linked to Osimhen on multiple occasions, but have yet to launch a concrete attempt. Nevertheless, now would be the ideal time for the Premier League giants to strike, as Osimhen’s contract with Napoli includes a £64.5 million release clause that will expire on July 15. That being said, reaching an agreement with the player’s entourage over personal terms might not be easy, as he’s currently on a €10m per year deal, while INEOS have been working tirelessly on lowering the wage bill.
Yankees give concerning injury update on SP Clarke Schmidt
New York Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt was lifted after just three innings on Thursday night against the Toronto Blue Jays, and they did not give a promising update when they revealed why. The Yankees say Schmidt left the game due to forearm tightness. Forearm tightness are the two words that baseball teams never want to hear about pitchers. In most cases, it can lead to an extensive absence at a minimum, and potentially surgery in the worst-case scenario. The Yankees starting rotation has already been in shambles this season due to the Tommy John surgery that ace Gerrit Cole had to undergo as well as the absence of Luis Gil. Schmidt has really stepped forward in both of their absences and entered Thursday's game with a 3.09 ERA in 13 starts. Going back to the start of 2024, he has a 2.97 ERA in 29 starts and has been one of the most reliable starting pitchers when on the mound. The Yankees entered Thursday's game having won just six of their previous 19 games and allowed their lead in the American League East to completely slip away to both the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays. Another potential starting pitching injury is the absolute last thing they need.
Failed 2021 trade will continue to haunt Mets in the 2025 All-Star Game
When the 2025 MLB All-Star starters were announced on Wednesday night, the fanfare was undoubtedly bittersweet for the New York Mets and their fans. The good? Shortstop Francisco Lindor was finally selected as the National League's starter at that position for the first time as a Met. When he was in Cleveland, he was selected to the American League All-Star team four times. However, that development would be quickly overshadowed by the selections of two other 2025 All-Stars: Detroit Tigers outfielder Javier Baez and Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong. In case you need a refresher: Those two were traded for each other in 2021, when the Mets desperately tried to save their season by trading the dynamic Crow-Armstrong for a rental of Baez, who would then leave that offseason for a long-term deal with the Tigers. While Crow-Armstrong has been a revelation for the Cubs (already a 20-20 player worth 4.8 bWAR), it's Baez who really provides the "slap in the face" to the Mets, so to speak, due to his unforeseen resurgence. The 32-year-old has mostly been an albatross over the course of his six-year contract with Detroit, but he has found new life in 2025 with a 118 OPS+ (18% above league average at the plate) and 2.2 bWAR in 72 games played thus far. Baez has particularly thrived since moving to the outfield, with a rating of two outs above average (OAA) defensively. Regardless of his success, however, Baez's selection as a Midsummer Classic starter was not expected by any means. And the Mets are now forced to watch as two of their former players suit up as All-Star starters. It's just another (painful) reminder to avoid desperation in summer trade talks, even with the addition of the third wild card in baseball. The Mets thought they could make a postseason run in 2021 and paid a heavy price when they ultimately fell short. Now with David Stearns leading the front office, the Mets will hope to sidestep such lopsided trades going forward and save themselves the embarrassment that they'll inevitably face down in Atlanta in just a few weeks.
Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. arrested by ICE officials
Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been arrested by immigration authorities and is "being processed for expedited removal from the United States," the Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday. Chavez is a native of Mexico, where he is the subject of an active arrest warrant for his "involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunitions and explosives," DHS said in a post to social media site X. Chavez was arrested Wednesday in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Studio City by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. Last Saturday, Chavez was in Anaheim, California, where the former WBC middleweight champion lost a unanimous decision to influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul. In supporting documents, DHS contends Chavez is believed to be affiliated with the Sinaloa Cartel, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization once led by the late Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. DHS said ICE had tagged Chavez an "egregious public safety threat" last December but he nonetheless entered the country in early January — before the inauguration of President Donald Trump — at the California/Mexico border. "Under President Trump, NO ONE is above the law — including world-famous athletes," DHS said in its news release. "Our message to any cartel affiliates in the U.S. is clear: We will find you and you will face consequences. The days of unchecked cartel violence are over." Chavez, 39, has a career record of 54-7-1 with 34 KOs.
