Parma appointed 29-year-old Carlos Cuesta as the youngest head coach in Serie A history on Thursday, replacing Cristian Chivu.

Cuesta comes from Arsenal, where he has served as an assistant to Mikel Arteta since 2000. Before that, he spent two years in Italy coaching Juventus’ youth teams.
Widely regarded as one of the best young coaches, Cuesta has been instrumental in Arsenal’s progress under Arteta.
Last season, Cuesta was heavily linked with Norwich and attracted interest from several Championship clubs and beyond. Now, he joins a struggling Parma side in need of a fresh start.
Parma returned to Serie A and were languishing in 18th place when Chivu was appointed in February, following seven years coaching Inter Milan’s youth teams.
In his first senior head coaching role, Chivu managed three wins, three losses, and seven draws in 13 matches to help Parma finish 16th and secure their place in Serie A.
Chivu departed after the season to take over at Inter, where he also played for six seasons.
Cuesta was reportedly preferred over Italian candidates Daniele De Rossi, Alberto Gilardino, and Paolo Vanoli.
Although the Serie A season does not start until 23 August, Cuesta is the ninth new coach appointed this summer. Two of the 20 clubs still have unfilled vacancies.
