Orioles could target $56 million former Cy Young at trade deadline image

The Baltimore Orioles have had a horrendous season to date and are likely headed for a quiet fall. Not only that, but they'll likely sell at the trade deadline.

However, they are within striking distance of the third American League Wild Card spot, so not all hope is lost just yet. They could take advantage of a weak Wild Card race and make a run.

But if they're going to do that, they need to make some trades to bolster their starting rotation, which has been the main culprit of their struggles.

FanSided's Zach Pressnell listed Baltimore as a possible fit for Sandy Alcantara.

"The Orioles aren't the prototypical buyer this season. They've struggled to win games this year and it's unlikely they'll compete for the World Series this season. But Alcántara's multi-year contract fits with the Orioles winning window," Pressnell wrote.

The Miami Marlins, unlike the Orioles are completely buried in the standings. They are 31-45 and 11 games back in the National League Wild Card race.

This makes a trade of Alcantara likely. The former Cy Young and two-time All-Star is pitching better lately, but is still 4-8 with a 6.69 ERA in 15 starts.

But as Pressnell notes, Baltimore needs an ace and preferably one with a few years of control. Alcantara has two years left on his deal plus a club option for 2027.

So, it would be different from when they traded for Corbin Burnes, who proved to be a one-year rental.

Baltimore is 6-4 in their last 10 games, so if they go on a run and gain some ground, trading for Alcantara might make sense and give them a reason to add rather than subtract.

We'll see how the next few weeks play out for the Orioles.
